JETLAB!
Project Type: Typographic Showcase
Duration: 0:40

Through this project, I aimed to showcase the characteristics, features, and letterforms of Swell Type's variable font Jetlab - through dynamic animation and thoughtful presentation.
All systems ready for takeoff...
Jetlab has such a good vibe to it. It's retro-futurist, but still super versatile - with four whole axes, there's so much you can do with its distinct personality. I decided to take it in a fun direction, inspired by Soviet Era control panels, our grimy local music scene, and even pulp magazines.
Leaving the launch pad...
I used a combination of techniques and software - After Effects to show off the versatility of the variable font, Blender for more complex scenes and motion tracking, and live action for that gritty, human touch. I'm super grateful to my friend Lexi for being my lovely actor -
Reaching target velocity!!!
The most satisfying part of this project was all the morphs. I wanted buttery smooth keyframes and seamless transitions that make you go "ooh!"
I like that I was able to highlight the unique qualities of Jetlab in a clever way - what do you think?
